Thornton, Colo. -- Outdoor gear and hunting retailer Cabela’s has announced an official opening date in Thornton.
The Sydney, Neb.-based chain is hosting a grand opening event Aug. 15 that will kick off a weekend-long celebration featuring outdoors celebrities, events for the family and special giveaways, among other things.
The 90,000-square-foot store, at Interstate 25 and 144th Avenue, will employ approximately 175 full-time, part-time and seasonal employees, most of whom have already been hired, said Nathan Borowski, communications specialist for Cabela’s.
Cabela’s — touted as the world’s largest direct marketer of hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor merchandise — is expected to become a regional draw for outdoor enthusiasts. The store will offer a variety of unique in-store features, including a fireplace, fudge shop and a mountain replica with game animals in their natural habitat.
The store, which also offers a gun library complete with an extensive array of firearms, is opening at a time when the state is enforcing new gun restrictions. The laws, which went into effect July 1, limit ammunition magazines to 15 rounds and enforce universal background checks.
“It’s something we continue to monitor,” Borowski said. “With more than 50 years of experience, we’re able to quickly adapt to any new regulations. We have a strong compliance record and we’ll make any changes necessary to comply with all laws.”
Cabela’s is expected to be an economic boon. It’s projected to generate about $1 million annually in sales and property tax revenues to Thornton, according to the city’s economic development officials.
